THE TERROR - SEASON 1 - REVIEW

Season 1 of "The Terror" is based on the novel by same name written by Dan Simmons. Story is a fictional retelling of the Franklin expedition. Now, In my view Terror stands at the top of web series on par with likes of Breaking bad and Chernobyl.

The reason what makes the series such a great watch is because of the mixture of Suspense, and Horror and folk lore. In fact the anthology series specifically concentrates on horror stories set up in historical settings.

Now what makes the series so great ? The main reason is there are probably none or very little content made about sailors and their exploits during the victorian era(1700 - 1900 era). There in general are very few well made movies and series that focus in this time period. These times when the sailors where enjoying rockstar status in society as scientists did in early 20th century and what tech innovators enjoy today.

As I said in the beginning the series is a mixture of Suspense, horror and folk lore. Now when you search Franklin expedition on the internet, the first images you find are are of bodies semi decomposed and showing signs of Canabalism. This was one of the first instances of Canabalism in western civilisation.

The series explores all the problems an expedition to Arctic could ever encounter. From Ship getting stuck, decease inside the crew, rebellions, hunger deaths and a supernatural element which is bound to kill the whole crew. I don't think anything else is left out to be explored in a series related to expeditions. Also explores basic human nature such as Power struggle(between Hickey and Francis), loyalty, addiction and especially Pride! The best character arc in the whole series is of James Fitzjames played by Tobias Menzies. Each stage of the disaster around him, his character slowly strips away the facade he puts up for society.  Like anyone else in real world, the image you present to society slowly strips away as ultimate threat looms.
